Chemical plants, a cement-making plant and the potential for increased traffic from a proposed toll bridge are but some of the environmental issues Africatown has faced for decades and continues to face now.
It’s the same story for other under-served communities who are over-served with a disporportionate share of environmental challenges. And it’s what the organizers of the Spotlight on Economic Justice wanted to talk about.
Renew Alabama Environmental & Climate Justice Tour arrived at the James Hope Community Center on Friday, August 23. It featured at the Hope Community Center. Leslie Fields, the director of environmental justice for Sierra Club and Dr. Adrienne Hollis, climate justice analyst for the Union of Concerned Scientists.
Their initiative is part of an effort to build a statewide platform for environmental and climate justice by bringing together organizations, faith leaders, youth and frontline communities like Africatown. This event will feature Leslie Fields, the director of environmental justice for Sierra Club and Dr. Adrienne Hollis, climate justice analyst for the Union of Concerned Scientists.
Partner organizations in the event included: Africatown-C.H.E.S.S and Mobile Environmental Justice Action Coalition. The tour is sponsored by GASP, People’s Justice Council, Power Shift Network, and The Sierra Club.
