The Mobile County Commission held a groundbreaking ceremony on May 14 for Lewis Landing, a nearly two-acre public park on Three Mile Creek in Africatown.
Located just north of downtown Mobile at the intersection of 1365 Conception Street Road and Three Mile Creek, Lewis Landing will feature a kayak launch, fishing piers, pavilions, green space, and parking.
The project is led by Mobile County District 1 Commissioner Merceria Ludgood and funded through a 2023 State of Alabama GOMESA (Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act) grant. Mobile County previously used GOMESA funds to purchase the property for $40,000 in 2020.
Construction is expected to take about six months and was awarded to Harris Contracting Services, LLC for the low bid of just over $810,000. Stantec is providing design and engineering services.
“Lewis Landing will help reconnect people with Africatown’s natural beauty, history, cultural legacy, and future opportunity,” said Ludgood. “We hope it becomes a place where families gather, neighbors meet, and visitors come to experience the richness of this community,” she added.
The groundbreaking program included remarks from Commissioner Merceria Ludgood, State Lands Director Patti McCurdy, Mayor Sandy Stimpson, Mobile City Councilor for District 2 William Carroll, Environmental Services Director Tina Sanchez, and Andersen Flen of the Africatown Heritage Preservation Foundation/Africatown Blueway Connections. Rev. Charles Bradley, Pastor of the nearby Blooming Grove Missionary Baptist Church, offered a blessing of the site.
Lewis Landing is one of several Mobile County initiatives advancing the Africatown area, including:
- Clotilda: The Exhibition at Africatown Heritage House (opened in 2023) tells the story of the last-known slave ship and the community founded by its survivors
- Africatown Hall & Food Bank (opened in 2024) houses the Africatown Redevelopment Corporation and a community food pantry run by Yorktown Missionary Baptist Church and the Africatown Community Development Corporation. It also offers office and meeting space for the Africatown Heritage Preservation Foundation, Clotilda Descendants Association, and the Mobile Environmental Justice Action Coalition.
- Other projects are to restore Africatown’s historic structures, preserve its heritage, and support culture and heritage tourism.
