AFRICATOWN’S UNESCO MARKER placed in Lewis Landing Park

There are now 52 sites in the United States that have been identified as Middle Passage Sites and Now Africatown is one of them. On January 19, 2026, Africatown erected its Middle Passage Port Marker during a Middle Passage and Port Marker’s Ceremony in it’s brand new Lewis Landing Park. During that ceremony it was also announced that plans are being made to conduct a Middle Passage and Port Markers “Convention” in Africatown that will host representatives from all 52 Middle Passage Sites in The United States.
The Middle Passage Ceremonies And Port Markers Project (MPCPMP) is a non-profit tax-exempt organization established in 2011 to honor the two million captive Africans who perished during the Trans-Atlantic crossing known as the Middle Passage and the ten million who survived to build the Americas.
UNESCO World Heritage Sites are landmarks and areas officially recognized for their exceptional cultural, natural, or mixed significance to humanity, promoting preservation and global awareness.
UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, established The World Heritage program in 1972 to identify, protect, and preserve places of outstanding universal value. These sites are considered vital for humanity’s cultural or natural heritage and are protected under international treaties. There are over 1,100 World Heritage Sites in more than 160 countries, including both cultural and natural landmarks.
